Sports Teams 'Will Benefit From Strong Canadian Dollar'

Sports teams in Canada will benefit from the strength of the country's dollar versus the US greenback, an expert has said.

Canada's ice hockey, basketball and baseball teams could be set to profit from the weakness of the American dollar, an expert has said.

Ian Clarke, chief financial officer of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, which controls the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Raptors, told news agency Reuters that the majority of teams' expenses are paid in US dollars.

This includes salaries, which are the biggest single expense.

However, as the money they generate is normally in Canadian dollars, the current growth in strength of the currency versus the US greenback gives the country's teams a surprising advantage, he said.

"We definitely want a stronger [Canadian] dollar because it means your US expenses don't cost you as much in Canadian dollars and therefore you have more available Canadian cash," Mr Clarke explained.

It means that teams which are not at the limit of their salary caps could potentially offer more lucrative contracts in a bid to bag some high profile players.

Those teams already at the top of their wage bill can instead look to pay off debts and invest more in coaching and facilities, said Marc Ganis, president of Sportscorp Ltd, a Chicago-based sports consulting firm.

Reuters has previously reported that the growing strength of the Canadian dollar has been driven by high oil and gold prices.ADNFCR-2648-ID-19421595-ADNFCR
