Andre Agassi should be judged for his brilliant tennis career rather than his recent admissions of drug abuse and lying, Andy Murray has said.
Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have both been critical of former Wimbledon champion Agassi following his confession that he took crystal meth and lied about it to avoid a ban after a positive drug test.
But current world number four Murray said that he would prefer to remember the Las Vegas tennis star from his on-court behaviour and from the time that they spent together.
The Scottish star said: "I loved Andre, met him numerous times, and he was unbelievably nice to me. I practised with him a lot. I guess it's something he has to deal with himself."
Murray, who has previously indicated that drug testing in tennis is too intrusive, added that he does not feel the sport has a doping problem.
He has been resting his injured wrist recently, but sport betting fans will be able to see him back in action at the Valencia Open, where he faces wild card entrant Daniel Gimeno-Traver in the first round.
The tournament runs from November 2nd-8th 2009.
