The phrase started in limit hold’em where checking when you could have bet allowed your opponent the chance to see the next round for nothing. Another variation of the play became known as the “free card raise” where a player would raise on the cheaper betting round to induce their opponent to check on the more expensive betting round when it was in the raisers interests for that to happen.

Let us say that you open raise from the cut-off with the Ks-9s and the big blind calls you. The raise was to 3.5bb and the big blinds call places 7.5bb in the pot.
